Energy crop supplies

Energy crop supplies

Crops for Energy can supply various energy crops including Short rotation coppice (SRC) willow  and poplar cuttings, miscanthus rhizomes and tree seedlings for broadleaved coppice and short rotation forestry (SRF). We can also source Eucalyptus seedlings for small scale SRF plots. Please contact us for details.

No order is too small from a few plants to tens of thousands for a large plantation.

Teagasc variety guideSRC willow varieties

SRC willows (Salix spp.) should be planted as intimate mixtures of up to 5 diverse varieties. This helps guard the plantation against damaging outbreaks of disease and pests.

You can read the SRC willow variety guide here . Some of the best varieties are described below:

Endurance

Over the last decade Endurance has consistently produced some of the highest yields in trials. It is a very diverse willow and has excellent woodfuel properties. Read more here.

Resolution

This variety has a tall erect habit with long lancet shaped leaves. It is very   fast growing and can reach 4 metres in its establishment year. This variety can yield up to 14 odt/ha/yr on good quality arable land in southern England.

Endeavour

This variety is less erect than others but drops its leaves earlier (an advantage for early harvesting) and also has excellent wooodfuel characteristics with a higher bulk density and calorific value and lower moisture content than other varieties.

IMG_6026Miscanthus

Miscanthus yields highly on good land and can be burnt in biomass boilers as chip, bales or pellets. We work closely with an experienced supplier of Miscanthus x giganteus rhizomes.

6 month old Eucalyptus glaucescens

Eucalyptus

If you want a tree that will produce excellent biomass yields over a longer rotation (typically 8 years) then we can provide seedlings. There are numerous species available including ones adapted to wet land such as Eucalyptus
rodwayii (the Swamp Peppermint) and ones that are more frost tolerant and deer browse resistant such as Eucalyptus glaucescens.
